Notes

I did not include the 7th child of Joel in my earlier message. I had communicated with you some years back that I thought Hiram was the son of Joel. I still am not 100% sure but still leaning toward that being the case.

That Hiram (who married Henrietta Augusta Woodbury) was the son of Joel is based on a couple things, both prone to error. The bio of Joel Whipple (Gazeteer of Caledonia and Essex Counties VT 1764-1887) indicates Joel (who married Martha Bennett) reared two sons. It goes on to state that one son, Hiram L,. was born 1841, and married Henrietta A,. dau of Edmund Woodbury in 1865 and had John D., Fred A., Charles E., Kate who died as an infant, and David J. We now know that Hiram had additional children.

In the 1880 census in Concord VT, Hiram and Daniel Whipple were living together, enumerated as brothers. Hiram was 38 (born about 1842 and Daniel H. was 44 born about 1835-36. Hiram's wife was Henrietta and Daniel H. was then a widow with sons F. Allen 13 and Edith M. 11. In the prior 1870 census DH Whipple was age 35 and had a wife Margaret age 29, children Forest and Edith. Ethan's son Daniel would have been about 50 in the 1880 census having been born in 1849 so this was a different Daniel. Daniel H. died at age 46 in 1881 which would have put his DOB around 1835. He was a widow when he died and I believe he was the Daniel H. Whipple who married his cousin Margaret Nancy Whipple.

That the census had enumerated Daniel and Hiram as brothers could of course be in error. They lived next door to Ethan Allen W. Whipple which might lead people to believe they were his sons but I believe it was because Daniel had been married to Ethan's daughter.

I do not find a son Hiram in any census with Ethan A. Whipple.
