Sherman applied for an officerus license (Assistant Purser) for the US Merchant Marine in December 1945. Within that application, it states that he was born Sherman Elms Whipple, the son of Clayton Jay and Ida Ruth (Elms) Whipple on 29 Jun 1897 in LaGrange/Cook/IL. It further states that pursuant to a Court Order issued 5 Mar 1946, his name was changed to Sherman Elms Whipple Cannon. His father died 12 Jul 1912 and his mother married Lucius Cannon in 1914, so since Shermanus name was changed by Court order, it can be presumed that a legal adoption took place, rather than Sherman just assuming his step-fatherus name.
