In the course of my own research, I have found some info on Gustavus A. Whipple. He was a freshman student at the Oneida Institute in 1837 according to the "Catalogue of the Trustees, Faculty and Students of the Oneida Institute. Whitesboro, 1837" which is held by the Utica (NY) Public Library. The Oneida Institute was founded by George Washington Gale, headed by Beriah Green and financed by Gerrit Smith. It was the first school in America to educate African Americans boys alongside white boys. It was academically rigorous, but more importantly, it was concieved and operated as a training ground for abolitionists.I also came across a "G. Whipple" in a document put online by Oberlin College. It's a statement published in 1835 in the Liberator (an anti-slavery paper) by a bunch of students of the Lane Seminary in Cinncinati who left the school because anti-slavery action and discussion were banned by the administration. Many of the "Lane Rebels" as they were called, went to Oberlin, and apparently, several of them went to Oneida.
