!IDENTITY: In email dated 22 Dec 2002 from Charles Snitchler (email hidden) to Weldon Whipple, 22 Dec 2002, Charles includes a copy of his correspondence with Carole E. Caruso, who concludes that this Justin Brown is the head of household listed in the 23 Aug 1850 Census of Galway, Saratoga, NY, p. 52:

• Justin Brown, 43, farmer, b. NY
• Elvira Brown, 46, b. NY
• Catharine Brown, 16, b. MA
• Maria A. Brown, 13, b. MA
• Sarah Brown, 11, b. MA
• Willard W. Brown, 6, b. MA
• Zilpha Whipple, 73, b. MA

In email dated 10 Feb 2008, Joanne Lahr-Kreischer states that this is a different Justin Brown from the Justin Brown who married Roswell Whipple's widow:

1. Elvira is not Elizabeth, Eliza or Mary E. (three names by which Roswell Whipple's wife was known)
2. The Zilpha Whipple listed in the 1850 census is 73 years old--she can't possibly be Roswell's youngest daughter
3. Charles states that the two families merged - but none of the children listed in the above census (Catherine age 16, Maria A, age 13, Sarah, age 11 and Willard W, age 6) are Roswell's children. (The Catharine age 16 was born about the same year as Roswell's daughter Catherine, but the Catharine in the above census is surnamed Brown, not Whipple.)

• "Granted, I believe that Mary Elizabeth (Thorn) Whipple, married for a second time to a person named Justin Brown on 28 Mar 1846 in Hinsdale, Berkshire, MA - just not the Justin Brown that Charles cites."
• "I have a copy of Roswell's will (Berkshire County, Massachusetts Will Book, Vol. 1, Pages 258-260), which lists his children as Ana Eliza, Julia Maria, Alexander, Catherine Temperance, Zilphas Amaline. His wife is listed as "Elisa" who is also the Executrix of the estate consisting of Real Estate (30 acres of land with house and barn) valued at $900.00, and his personal estate valued at $1,759.03."
• "Another twist to this mess - Vol. 50 Page 404 (1846-1848) of the probate records reads as follows:

  'The account of Justin Brown and his wife Eliza for Mary Eliza Whipple, Executrix of the will of Roswell P. Whipple, late of Hinsdale, in the county of Berkshire, deceased.'

  Just thought it was a bit interesting that Justin's wife Eliza, and Mary Eliza, as widow of Roswell, are specifically listed when the marriage between Roswell's widow and Justin Brown took place in March 1846."
• Vol. 54 P. 66 (March 2,1852) shows a Guardian Petition and Notice for the sale of Real Estate

  Elisha A. Wells of Pittsfield, Guardian of Ann Eliza Whipple, Julia M. Whipple, Alexander Whipple, Catherine T. Whipple, and Zylpha E. Whipple - heirs to the land Town of Hinsdale, 30 acres w/buildings.

• Vol. 54 P 96 (April 6, 1852) shows Bond of sale of Real Estate

  Elisha A. Wells, Guardian of Ann Eliza Whipple, Julia M. Whipple, Alexander Whipple, Catherine T. Whipple, and Zylpha E. Whipple, minor children of Roswell P. Whipple, late of Hinsdale.
