!BIOGRAPHY: "Edwin Clark was born near Cincinnati, Ohio, moved to Kentucky at age four and to Athens, Ohio, at age seven. He remained there until 1862. Like his five brothers (two of whom were killed), Edwin Clark fought in the Civil War. His military papers show that he was 17 years old, 5' 6" tall, fair complexion, gray eyes, and light hair when he enlisted; he gave his occupation as student. Afterwards he admitted that he had run away from home when he was 15 to enlist. He enlisted for three years and was mustered in Company C, 74th Ohio Infantry, 11 March 1862 at Athens, Ohio. He saw action at the Stone River, Marietta, Punkin Vine, Peach Tree Creek and was with Gen. Sherman at Atlanta. He was taken prisoner the day before Atlanta fell. He was sick in the hospital at Tullahoma, Tenn., from 8 July 1863 through January 1864. He reenlisted in March 1864 and was assigned to Company K, 69th Ohio Volunteers, for two more years. He was taken prisoner near Atlanta and spent five months at Andersonville Prison. He was mustered out at Camp Chase, Ohio--not quite 19 years old.
"Edwin Clark and Mary Elizabeth Trumbull were married at Omaha, Neb., in 1871 and moved the following year to Creston, Iowa. There Edwin was occupied as a merchant ("E.K. Clark, Painter and Dealer in Wall Paper and Decorations") at 204 Pine Street.
"At the time of the 1900 federal census Edwin K. Clark (54, Ohio), wife Mary E. (52, Ill.), sister-in-law Sarah M. Trumbull (50, Ill.), the last four Clark children, and one servant were living at 511 N. Pine Street. In 1995 the house at that address was a small asphalt-shingled dwelling across the street from the old high school. The family attended the Congregational Church, and Edwin was a member of Lodge 207, I.O.O.F., and the G.A.R.J.P." --C. Trumbull
