Nan writes: " I have discovered Sylvanus's middle name, which may or may not be of some significance. My grandmother recently passed away, and in her posessions, where family letters containing birth, marriage, and death information for the Whipple's. Sylvanus's middle name is listed as Averil, and I wondered if this perhaps suggested that he was the son of Enoch Whipple, who in turn was the son of Jonathon Whipple and Kisiah Averill. Kisiah apparently died young, shortly after giving birth to Enoch, and I entertained the idea that Enoch may have given his mother's maiden name to his son. Is this a viable possibility?"

Phelps, New York is not far from Oswego County, New York. Sylvanus was elected Deacon in Michigan in 1858. He may have been in Phelps, NY until 1857 where as Henty would have been 24 years old and his first child was born in 1855. Probably married before his parents went to Michigan.
