He obtained an MD degree from Philadelphia Medical College then rode a horse over 2,000 miles to the Indian Territory (the present state of Oklahoma) to serve the Indians as a medical missionary. He came to Little Rock [Arkansas] in 1842 with his second wife, Eliza, with whom he had eight children. He was elected mayor in 1847. Dr. Dodge and Eliza with others of his family are buried at Mt. Holly Cemetery.
