Because of my involvement with chess history, I have an interest in David Lawson, author of Paul Morphy: The Pride and Sorrow of Chess, particularly because he was born in Glasgow.I have noted your very detailed web site on Whipple families, so I wanted to pass on a little information.I have attached the following 3 images obtained from the Scotlands People website:I have searched the Scotlands People web site for marriage details but can find nothing regarding a Howie/Whipple ceremony (you give 24 May 1885 in Glasgow).A 2010 edition of 'Paul Morphy: The Pride and Sorrow of Chess' was published by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Press, edited by a Thomas Aiello. Mr Aiello, on page xiv of his Editor's Introduction, refers to the parents, and states that Lawson '...apparently moved to the United States in 1893.' I mention this because it differs from information in your notes re sources, which mentions the mother and son arriving on the Anchoria in 1890. The book also refers to several marriages of David Lawson. Let me know if you wish any further information on these marriages.I hope this information helps in some small way.
