I also have Samuel Whipple son of Jonathan from circumsantial evidence. From "the Genealogy of the Brainerd/Brainerd Family in America by Lucy Abigail Brainard, 1908, pages 158 and 245, it brings Wesley Whipple back to Johnathan Whipple as follows: (listing of Selinda Nancy Brainard, dau of John R., of Avon, Ontario, NY, who m George Grogan Whipple b 11.2.1813 Williston, VT) George "son of Wesley and Elvira (Judson) Whipple and was the son of Jonathan Whipple who served seven years in the Revolutionary War and was wounded at Bunker Hill. Jonathan's wife's name was Elizabeth Burnham of Massachusetts. Elvira was the dau of Enoch and Charity (Winslow) Judson and she was sixth from Governor Winslow of Massachusetts." The source goes on to list Wesley's movements to Ohio, marriage and children etc. Obviously this source skipped the Samuel generation but since Wesley was born 1793 he would rather have been the son of Samuel....Back to Samuel Whipple, according to his Rev War Pension File, Samuel enlisted in the MA line at Danvers MA, residing in Danvers. He was a private in Captn Elisha Whitney's company of minute men and the record shows he died 1827 in Essex County, MA (this from a letter written from the Pension Administration to the Quartermaster General, War Dept, Washington Memorial Branch in 1937 upon application for a headstone which leads one to believe there were two Samuels in the war but they believed they were one in the same. (See more below on date of death) The letter indicates there being only one Samuel Whipple or variant thereof who served from Danvers. The date of death they give for this soldier is February 6, 1827. In the Essex County Probate Records, 1638-1840, they list two Samuels, the one who died the 1827 date probated in May of that year, gentleman of Hamilton. The other Samuel is probated January 27, 1802, of Danvers, housewright, intestate (most likely the subject Samuel, see probate below).
The pension application request does not state the name of his parents nor date of birth. It does state he was a private and in 1778 held rank of Sergeant in Captn Samuel Page's Reg. and under Col Benjamin Whipple's command, Continental Army. He enlisted in Danvers on April 28, 1777, and was discharged December 31, 1780. He served again in 1781 in Captn Lunt's company of the 10th Mass regiment and continued until the close of the war.
The testimony of the widow, says he alternately died about 1797 (40 years ago in Danvers) but another affidavit in the file says he disappeared and was never heard of again. Elizabeth also testified that he was declared deceased, intestate, by the court and she applied for a warrant for lands as widow of Samuel in January of 1807.
Captn Samuel Page's affidavit indicates he (Samuel) was a housewright and enlisted and was immediately appointed an orderly Sergeant in his company in 1777 for three years and continued to serve until march of 1780 when he (Captn Page) resigned. He further indicates that Samuel Whipple continued to serve after that date until "the Peace" when he returned to Danvers. Whipple was wounded October 7, 1777 at Bemis Heights in his left shoulder and was with Captn Page at Stony Point and was honorably discharged and remained at Danvers three or four years after "the Peace" and then it was reported he went to South Carolina and there died (statement of Captn Page, dated at Salem 12.14.1802).
The Sons of the American Rev records list the grandfather of Stephen as Jonathan Whipple who was a Rev War Sol from MA, private in John Albee's Co etc and Mass Militia as a Corporal. This record states he was the great grandson of Nathaniel Winslow and Hannah Fitch. (Nathaniel b 1730 Rochester MA, was the father of Charity Winslow who m Enoch Judson, father of Elvira, wife of Wesley. Hannah, widow of Nathaniel, lived Salisbury, CT and died in Williston VT.)
This is still a little muddy with the father of Samuel based on what must be an error in the records which skipped a generation. There were of course other Whipples living in Danvers MA at the time Samuel enlisted.
