!BIOGRAPHY: Worked with his father in the latter's sawmill until 18 years old, attended school at Paw Paw, then taught school in Paw Paw until 28 years old. Graduated from the Northern Indiana Business Institute at Valparaiso, Indiana, and then went to Chicago to work with the People's Gas Light and Coke Company where he was chief clerk in the Hyde Park branch. After the consolidation of the gas companies, he was given charge of the construction work of gas services and service repairs in the city. In 1903, because of ill health, resigned his position and moved to Leoni Township, Jackson County, Michigan, where he operated a successful dairy farm. (The farm was previously owned by Evander Holloway, and was adjacent to both the John Scofield and Samuel Whipple farms. In 1920 he was appointed Deputy County Clerk. In 1925 the governor of the state appointed him Assignment Clerk for the Jackson County Circuit Court, which position he held until his retirement in 1944. (H.B. Whipple, p. 101)
