William Whipple, son of Joseph and Mary (Virgil, Smith) Whipple, served as a drummer during the War of 1812 in the 20th Connecticut Militia in the 4th Company of Infantry, commanded by Captain Paul Harvey. Army records for June, 1813 and August, 1814, the only records available, show that William was paid $9 per month. Marks Whipple, younger brother of William, stated that William "died young near Buffalo in service in the War of 1812." --Sources: National Archives. Military Records, 20th Regt.
