!DEATH: "Alfred (Freddy) died of exposure after being trapped on a small ledge on the vertical side of a mountain for 28 hours in high winds and freezing rain. His friend Sidney Crouch was with him and they had to tie themselves together because the ledge was a mere 2 x 4 foot area and there was no room to sit or lay down. The mountain includes the famous Man in the Mountain, one of the tallest peaks of Mount Washington, part of the White Mountain Range in New Hampshire. Alfred was a National Honor Society member during high school and co-captain of the football team. He was an only son." --R. Gilebarto
!EDUCATION: Graduated Norwich Free Academy, Norwich, Connecticut. Attended Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island. --R. Gilebarto
!SOURCE: Email from Duane Schultz (email hidden) to Weldon Whipple, 5 May 2007. Duane indicates that Alfred did not die on Hampton Mountain:
In fact, Freddie Whipple died on CANNON MOUNTAIN beneath the OLD MAN OF THE MOUNTAIN. (...and the Old Man of the Mountain was not "one of the tallest peaks," but was a rock formation that--until it broke apart in 2003--resembled the profile of an old man.)See "The Boys on the Cliff," which appeared in Reader's Digest, August 1961.
