Oliver was a hemophiliac. This is an hereditary bleeding tendency which occurs only in males and is transmitted by females. Oliver is thought to have inherited his hemophiliac gene from his mother Mary Appleton who received her hemophiliac gene from her father John Oliver, who migrated to Newbury, Mass. from Bristol, England in 1639 and was probably the first hemophiliac in New England. The Appleton-Swain family hemophiliac gene has been traced to the 20th century, through almost 400 years and 13 generations.
