"James M. Petty, accredited genealogist of Salt Lake City, Utah, determined Jonathan's Revolutionary War service from among several Jonathan Whipples in Massachusetts by studying the town records of Danvers. These records show that Jonathan moved from Danvers in the late 1760s and returned in 1784 after living in Stonington, New Longon, Co., Conn. Petty also identified Jonathan as the son of Capt. Stephen Whipple of Ipswich who served in the French and Indian Wars."
