William J. and Mary Whipple Scholarship:
For students from underrepresented groups. (Established October 2001) Background: William and Mary (Johnstone) Whipple were managers of the Colonial Inn where many college faculty members lived. Mary was hired by Dean Gibson as the first House Mother of Alumni Hall, when it was still just a Quonset hut. Mary was also the matron of the WCA Home in Fredonia. They were a couple who truly cared about others and formed lasting friendships with SUNY Fredonia people because of their many demonstrations of kindness. William and Mary were parents of Virginia Whipple Maytum, and therefore Dr. Maytum's mother and father-in-law. Dr. Maytum remembers them as wonderful people. He specifically remembers Mary as one of the best mothers-in-law a person could have!!SOURCE: "Captain John Whipple of Providence, Rhode Island, 1616-1685" by Floy S. Hyde.
