The story that was handed down about this marriage goes like this: Zachariah was in poor health and needed a nurse. Louisa was young and strong and needed to find a decent way to to support herself and her four young children. They arranged to get married, which was the only respectable thing to do in their day. He had a big house and some property. She slept at one end of the house and his bedroom was on the opposite end. She nursed and cared for him until his death. Then, as was pre-arranged, she inherited his property.
