Descendants," by Charles William Farnham, in _Genealogies of Rhode Island
Families from Rhode Island Periodicals_ (Baltimore: Genealogical Pub. Co.,
1983), 2:138.
!SOURCE: "Descendants of Welcome Sayles," email from N. Combs to Weldon
Whipple, 19 Mar 2008. Cites/notes the following:
- Dorothy Higson White,
Descendants of Roger Williams, Book III, (2002), 228 (marriage to James
Pitts--see note below)
- Rhode Island Cemeteries Database Index (birth, death,
burial)
- NAC note: White says James Pitts married Alice Sayles, dau. of
Welcome Sayles {79603} and has another reference to his marrying Ann Eliza
Sayles, dau. of Daniel Sayles 18549}; the John Smith the Miller book says he
married Eliza Ann Sayles 19834, dau. of Daniel Sayles 18549. I would lean
towards Alice, dau. of Welcome, as she is buried in the same cemetery as her
parents. I have Eliza Ann Sayles 19834 married to James S. Cook--see separate
message; they are buried in the same cemetery as her parents, siblings, etc.
who lived in Glocester (later became Burrillville), Providence, RI, while
Welcome Sayles and family lived in Smithfield (later became Lincoln/North
Smithfield), Providence, RI. Furthermore, in 1850 James Pitts has a 2nd wife,
Mary Thompson, and a daughter by her.
!SOURCE: Email from N. Combs to Weldon Whipple, 24 Apr 2010 Cites Massachusetts
Vital Records, 1841-1910:
- "Lucius Stone Whipple {77589} and Maria
Whipple Pitts were married Dec. 16, 1873 in Douglas, Worcester, MA. It was his
2nd marriage and her 1st. Maria was b. 1847 (age 26 at mar.) in Douglas,
Worcester, MA., the d/o James {19838} and Mary Pitts {118981} (Douglas
255:256)"
- "Maria/Marie Whipple Pitts d. April 16, 1891 in Douglas,
Worcester, MA, age 43-11-25 {b. in Blackstone, Worcester, MA d/o James {19838}
and Mary (Thompson) {118981} Pitts (Douglas 420:519). A daughter (no first
name) was born April 15, 1847 in Blackstone, Worcester, MA to James and Mary
Pitts (Blackstone 23:196). {Interesting connection--on James Pitts' WGW page
is this comment I made "Furthermore, in 1850 James Pitts has a 2nd wife, Mary
Thompson, and a daughter by her." That daughter is Maria Whipple Pitts above.}
Mary Thompson {118981} was b. 1823 in MA and d. April 27, 1915 in RI where she
is bur. in the Union Cemetery, Great Rd., North Smithfield, RI (src: Rhode
Island Cemeteries Database Index)."
- "James Pitts {19838} manufacturer, age
86, d. March 5, 1895 in Smithfield, Providence, RI. He was the s/o Joseph
Pitts and Hannah Cleveland (Blackstone 456:558)."
