Notes
!SOURCE: "Direct Descendants of Pardon Tillinghast," email from N. Combs to
Weldon Whipple, 26 Mar 2013. Cites Ancestry World Tree (birth, marriage,
death). Gives name Sarah Butterworth.
!SOURCE: Email from Kent Watkins (email hidden) to Weldon Whipple, 6
Sep 2013. Regarding this individual, he writes (citing Wayne Tillinghast's
monograph on the Tillinghast family):
- Wayne T. (p. 1) is not sure if
Elder Pardon T.'s first wife's first name is Sarah or Mary. He leaves it blank,
although notes that Sarah might be a possibility, given a couple of other
sources. And the first daughter was named Sarah (b. Providence 17 Nov. 1654, d.
1671 at about age seventeen, unmarried (9). You do not list Sarah the daughter
at all (this came from John Gifford Tillinghast, The Founder of the Tillinghast
Family, [note 1] 17). You are willing to accept Pardon's wife as being named
Sarah, apparently based on the email from N. Combs.
- You give Sarah
Butterworth, Pardon's wife, as being born in 1630, whereas two other
Tillinghast historians are quoted in Wayne T's book (1) as 1623, while Rose
Tillinghast gives it as 1633. Wayne T. leaves it undecided. You also give her
death as 1661, although the date of 1660 is given in the aforementioned
historians' accounts (FIHSL typescripts, 1923 and 1944). Not a biggie there.
Wayne T. isn't sure of a death date, other than before his second marriage to
Lydia Taber in Newport. You also fill in the blank of Wayne T.'s as to her
mother's maiden name, Mary Lanbotham. You also supply 'new' information that
she and Pardon were married in Swansea, Bristol, Massachuetts. I wonder why
there? Wayne T. doesn't have a marriage location.I see in an unrelated
record from yours (viz. Sampson Mason/Mary Butterworth in ancestry.com
) that a Mary Butterworth, the daughter of Henry B. and
Mary L. B., was born at Halifax, Yorkshire, England, and died at Rehoboth,
Bristol Col, Ma., but she is documented there to have married Sampson Mason,
not Pardon Tillinghast! And their son was Samuel Mason of Swansea who married
Lydia Masters Taber Tillinghast, after Pardon died, and after his first wife,
Elizabeth Miller died. I wonder if the placement of Henry B. and Mary L.B. is
perhaps in error, as I have not seen anything yet that provides a clue as to
the first name of the Butterworth woman that Pardon married, or more
importantly, what family she was affiliated with. As Wayne T. pointed out, Rose
T. got it confused with John Butterworth, the founder of the First Baptist
Church in Swansea, Ma., but the book by Austin, Three Generations of the
Butterworth Family, New England Historical Genealogical Register, makes it
clea! r that this woman married William Hayward. So, we Tillinghasts are still
in the dark. If you have additional evidence of that or can connect me up with
N. Combs, perhaps he has fresh new evidence that will clear this up.Wayne
T. says that she died at Newport, RI, not Rehoboth, Ma., and that further
muddies the waters, because indeed her parents in the Mason documentation says
that her parents, Henry and Mary died at Newport.
