"Abbie was born in Greenfield, Pennsylvania. Before she was 2 years old, her birth father (Lewis E. Whipple) died. When she was 5 years old, her birth mother (Mary Yarns) passed. At that time, Mary and Abraham Jones of Blakely, Pennsylvania took the responsibility of raising her. Abbie would later meet and marry William Simrell on August 21, 1888. They began their family and eventually settled in Terre Haute, Indiana."—Norma Doolittle
