The History of Bocking in the Rawlinson MSS, Essex 5, p. 32 at the Bodleian Library (Oxford) states that John Hawkins, oldest son and heir of John Hawkins of Braintree, was a chief inhabitant of the town and trustee for the poor and had two wives, the first not mentioned and the second Mary Levitt. He was a respected citizen and trustee for the poor of Bocking.
