ALLIE J. BABCOCK, 79 of 172 N. Elmira St., Athens died Saturday, Oct. 19, 1991 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre. Born March 11, 1912 in Waverly, he was the second child of 13 children born to Allie and Millie Whipple Babcock. He attended East Smithfield School. He worked in the Athens Silk Mill and Waverly Silk Mill for 24 years. He then was employed as a machine operator of I.R. In Athens from 1951 until 1977, when he retired. Mr. Babcock was an active member of the Waverly L.O.O.M. 1490. He joined in 1944 and had held all the local offices that existed. He was governor from 1960-61 and again from 1970-71. He was chairman of the Moose Christmas Basket Committee for 20-plus years and chairman of the Valley Christmas Charity Committee. He was a 1971 Pilgrim Degree holder, the highest degree awarded in the Moose Fraternity; president of the 14th district in New York state and a state officer. He worked on the state Conservation Committee. He was a life member of the 2nd and 3rd of the Moose. A member of Protection Hose Co. No. 1, Athens, he was president for two years, assistant fire chief for two years, President of the Fireman's Relief for 12 years and on the Fire Board for 10 years. He was also a member of The Sons of Italy in Sayre and the V.F.W. In Sayre. He received the Good Citizen Award (1988) and the Americanism Award (1991) from the V.F.W. He was predeceased by his wife, Leotha; a son, Gerald; a brother, Donald; a sister, Hazel, and his parents. He is survived by his children, Bertha House of Athens, Viola Farr of Lockport, N.Y., Phyllis Shipman of Lockwood, Gigi DiPio of Sayre and Allie (Bud) of Athens; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Viola) Kitchen of Athens, Mrs. Manuel (Helen) Alfaro of Walnut, Cal., Mrs. John (Annabel) Slater of Spring Hill, Fla. And Mrs. Kenneth (Pauline) Grissom of Claremont, Cal.; brothers, Ralph Babcock of Athens, Louis Babcock of Athens, Charles Babcock of Elmira, Robert Babcock of Waverly, N.Y, Richard Babcock of Waverly and Rodney Babcock of Sheshequin; several nieces and nephews and a close friend, Aldine Gernert of Athens. Friends may call at the Jenkins Funeral Home, 111 S. Main St., Athens, Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. At the funeral home with the Rev. Howard Hockenbury of the Athens United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery. A Pilgrim Degree service will be held at the funeral home Tuesday at 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Bradford County unit of the American Cancer Society, 413 S. Main St., Athens, Pa.
