Here are my notes on Priscilla Whipple vs. Priscilla Whippo who m Dr. Sanford Smith. Perhaps someone else has reached some better conclusion re Whipple vs. Whippo but as yet I have not found anything definitive as to if/when Whippo changed the name geographically to Whipple or vice versa.Research notes:
- NEHGS article by Gary Boyd Roberts (author of Ancestry of American Presidents) cites Boston Transcript Genealogical Column # 3679 (Bush, Smith, Whipple 1932) and gives name as Priscilla Whipple b Cambridge NY abt 1763. Other sources indicate she was b 1764 and d 8.26.1838 Pottstown, PA.
- In looking at the will of Priscilla's husband - Sanford Smith, (Abstract of Wills, Administrations and Guardianships State of NY - 7.29.1815) I note that one of the individuals bonded in the administration of the will was a James Whippo of Scipio, Cayuga, NY along with Priscilla Smith and Lawrence Smith.
- In Soldiers in King Phillips War, a section taken from Lawrence Hammond's diary, notes a James Whippo is "probably from Barnstable where the name was Whipple, but called Whippo in Boston." (this group of soldiers enlisted Boston, MA and no known connection to Priscilla only that of a name change Whipple to Whippo) Whippo is generally a Scottish name although ancestor of this James was said to have come from Cornwall. The Original Scots Colonists of Early America 1607-1707-supplement has James listed as arriving Boston 1691. James Whippo m Experience Hinckley and 2nd Abigail Green(ough), Barnstable, MA. His descendants through grandson George moved to PA.
- James Whipple, Barnstable m 2.25.1692 Abigail Hammond, b 4.27.1667 dau of Lawrence Hammond and wife Abigail Collins, (per Savage) James Hammond's diary- Abigail, widow of Luke Greenough m 2nd James Whippo of Barnstable) children, James b 11.1692, Lawrence b 1694, Jane b 1696, Elizabeth b 1700, George b 1703, Margaret 1706.
- James Whippo b 10.14.1760 d 1.24.1832 probably descended from the Barnstable Whippos and resided Washington County, NY . He m Hannah Wood of Dartmouth MA. He was perhaps related to Priscilla Whippo of Cambridge Washington NY.
- Book of Biographies (Lawrence County, PA) James Whippo b 1840 son of Dr. Charles Tillotson Whippo, m Althea A. Warner dau of James Warner. Subject's grandfather James Whippo b 10.14.1760 d 1.24.1832 was Scotch by descent, res Washington Co, NY, rem to Cayuga 1802 m Hannah Wood of Dartmouth b 5.5.1771 d 8.30.1838 (Quaker).
