The first reference I've found so far of Ewen is an 1849 Intention of Marriage to Sarah M. Beaumont of Canton ( The record of births, marriages and deaths and intentions of marriage, in the town of Stoughton from 1727 to 1800, and in the town of Canton from 1797-1845 (1896), Publisher: Canton, Mass., Printed by W. Bense, http://www.archive.org/details/recordofbirthsma00canto). Ewen was employed as a Bootmaker in Stoughton, MA. His 1850 census first lists this occupation and documents at the Stoughton Historical Society indicate he was employed at the Flex Shoe Company as late as 1891. He retired from the boot industry sometime before 1900. He removed from Stoughton to Waltham, MA shortly after Sarah's death in 1905. Documents record that he lived with his daughter Lilias Mary (Bryden) Butman and her husband Elmer Butman until at least 1910. The attached death certificate indicates he likely died at the home of his daughter Abigail and her husband Simeon Whipple. Ewen's parents are listed on his death certificate as Robert Bryden and Lilias Taylor. So far, I've found no other information about them. I've initiated an inquiry with the NEHGS to see if they came through the Nova Scotia/New Brunswick Bryden and Taylor families.
