• "James A. Whipple, a native of Boston, was apprenticed to a steam engine manufacturer and became a skilled machinist and engineer. He studied submarine diving and pursued a career as a 'salvor,' recovering sunken property along the Atlantic coast and in Caribbean and Mediterranean waters. Whipple was a talented inventor. He made substantial improvements in submarine armor and diving apparatus, particularly with his develoment of a trumpet used to communicate between a diver and an assistant above water." His 3 linear feet of papers, containing 479 letters and 211 business documents related to his work raising sunken property, and other material concerning his submarine diving inventions, are in the William L.
