!SOURCE: Email from Beverly H to Weldon Whipple, 11 Apr 2015. She notes the following:
Amy Jane Whipple b 1825 Waterford, NL, CT was the daughter of Anthony Whipple b abt 1780 (best guess) Waterford and Hannah Fargo b abt 1793 Waterford. Amy had siblings, Joanna and Minerva and probably others. Anthony was deceased or absent from the household by 1850 and Amy Whipple Capron can be found living with her mother Hannah.
1850 Census, Waterford, New London, CT (all b CT):
- Hannah Whipple, 56, b. CT
- Isaac Fargo, 40, Farmer (prob brother to Hannah), b. CT
- Betsey Fargo, 82, (if I'm reading the age correctly prob mother to Hannah and Issac), b. CT
- Amy Capron, 25, b. CT
- Joanna Whipple, 12, b. CT
- Charles S Capron, 1, (prob son of Amy and John S. Capron), b. CT
- Minerva Whipple 17, b. CT
In 1850 I believe Amy's husband is alive and in California but he either dies or does not return as in 1858 Amy marries husband #2 James Henry Rice. I do not find them in 1860 and Amy dies in 1868. Her second husband remarries and one of Amy's children with Capron is found living w/ him in 1870.
1870 Census, Waterford, New London, CT:
- James Rice, 45, Farmer, b. Ireland $2000 $500
- Cordelia, 25, keeping house, b. Ireland (2nd wife Mary Cordelia Hawkins)
- Anna Finell, 4, b CT
- John Rice, 8, CT
- Mary J Rice, 6, CT
- William Rice, 4, CT
- Daniel Rice, 1, CT
- Addison Capron, 17, laborer, b. CT (son of Amy and John S. Capron)
According to A Modern History of New London, CT (Marshall, 1922), Amy died at the birth of her last child, the name of the child given in that source is Thomas Rice b 8.29.1868 (whether that child d. or is the Daniel age 1 appearing in the 1870 census is unknown. James Rice m his second wife in 1869 so Daniel could possibly be their child.)
Amy married James Henry Rice 4.6.1858. According to the source upon Mr. Rice's marriage to Amy Whipple Capron he became a resident of the old Whipple house in the Gilead section of Waterford built by Anthony Whipple in 1642 (my note, not sure who this very early Anthony was but undoubtably Amy came from the Waterford Whipple line.)
Her children with James Rice were:
- John b 12.17.1861 b Waterford CT (d 1934 FindaGrave)
- Mary Jane b 2.20.1863 Waterford (d 1871)
- William b 3.20.1865 Waterford (d 1925)
- Thomas b 8.29.1868 Waterford (another source has b on the 26th)
According to FindaGrave Amy's son Addison Capron d in 1906. I find no further record of the child Charles S. Capron. This source has a birth date for Amy Jane "Annie" Whipple Capron Rice as 11.1825 Waterford.
Amy's father Anthony is referred to as Anthony Jr so perhaps he was the son of Anthony Whipple and Amy Beebe. Hope this helps solve the puzzle.

Birthdate of Amy Jane Whipple can be verified through the will of her father, Anthony Whipple, who died in 1832 age 81. His will was written 25 Aug 1832. In his will, he leaves his estate, real and personal, to his wife Hannah, in lieu of her rights of dower. Upon reaching the age of 21, "which should happen 3 Feb 1845", the estate passes to daughter Amy and her heirs and assigns forever. That would make Amy's date of birth 3 Feb 1824. Anthony also mentions a son in his will but the name is unreadable. Upon reaching the age of 21, "which should happen 14 Jan 1851", the son will be given a cow or the value there of.I found the will of Anthony Whipple in the will and probate database online at ancestry.com
