"On July 9th, he writes that Elezer Whipple went overboard at about two o'clock in the morning. From report, Abel Hunnewell recalls that Eleazer was taken down with fever and Joseph attended him. In the early morning while delirious he escaped the vigilance of his companions, and went on deck and was lost overboard--no one witnessing the tragedy. Eleazer Whipple had his twenty-fourth birthday on the ship, having been born on April 15, 1828."On the previous page (p. 83), the same source tells of Eleazer's departure on the sailing ship with two cousins:
"(This is a copy of a letter that Lewis G. Whipple of Waterville wrote to his son William, some years ago, in which he quotes abstracts from the Diary of Joseph Hunnewell, ...) ... The diary of Joseph B. Hunnewell states that a party left Solon on February 12, 1852. In it were Eleazer Whipple, Calvin Bosworth, and Joseph. These boys were cousins and all in the early twenties. They left New York in a sailing ship on March 2d..."
