• Face Sheet of Rev War Soldier Nathan Whipple, wife Mary, born in Vermont (note of pension info Bennington VT), Soldier in NY line.
• Pages 2-4 Nathan is of Pownal, Bennington, VT, mustered at Fishkill NY by Captain Dubois, wounded at Yorktown, bayonet through left arm, discharged at Snake Hill, 1783.
• Pages 4-6 In 1820 Nathan is 65 residing in Pownal, VT, Mary is wife is ae 57, he is supporting a son, Daniel who is a "weakling" unable to work and Nathan is infirm. Daniel is noted as being age 8.
• Pages 7-9 Mary is a widow making her declaration for pension benefits, dated 9.5.1838, ae 73. Mary states to the court that she was married September 1787 in Petersburgh NY to Nathan Whipple and that they were married one year and "from Sept to January" when the oldest child Nathan was born 1.11.1789.
• Page 10 Declaration of son John G. Whipple in support of his mother's request for pension benefits. He confirms that the dates were written in a family bible a copy of which is now in his possession. John is 38 years old (1838) and living in "City of New York" and states he is the son of Nathan Whipple, who was deceased January 1832.
• Pages 11-12 Letter from Pension Administration to a descendant states Nathan enlisted 1780, private under Captain Samuel Pitts, 2nd NY Regiment, was wounded at Yorktown and discharged 1783, resided Pownal, Bennington, VT and died 1.7.1832. Further states Nathan married Mary Hill, they then both of Petersburg NY and that Mary was born March of 1765 and was living in 1843 in Charlton, Saratoga, NY and that her sons were Nathan, Daniel and John G. Whipple.

On this Twentieth day of September 1850, personally appeared before me the Subscribing Authority a Justice of the Peace in and for said County, Mary Whipple of Charlton, and made Solemn Oath in due form of Law, that she is the identical widow of Nathan Whipple, deceased, who was a Soldier in the Revolutionary War and on pensioner of the United States; That she is now drawing a pension at the rate of eighty dollars per annum; and that she believes herself entitled to an increase of pension, and asks for whatever may be due her under any of the acts or Resolutions of Congress, which are applicable to her case. I further request that any certificate of pension may be sent to Henry Robinson Esq, my Agent or Attorney, at Greenwich, Washington County N.Y.

Sworn and subscribed this Twentieth day of September, 1850, before me N.H. Brown, Justice of the Peace

Madam:

I have to advise you from the papers in the Revolutionary pension claim, W. 18391, it appears that Nathan Whipple enlisted in January 1780 and was a private in Captain Samuel Pell's Company, Colonel Philip Van Cortlandt's Second New York Regiment, he was wounded by a bayonet in the left arm at the battle of Yorktown and was discharged in June 1783.

He was allowed pension on his application executed April 4, 1818, while a resident of Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont, aged about fifty-eight years.

He died January 7, 1832, at Bennington, Vermont.

Soldier married in September 1787 at Petersburg, New York (they were both then of said Petersburg). She was born in March 1765 and was allowed pension on her application executed September 5, 1838, while living in Bennington County, Vermont.

In 1843, she was living in Charlton, Saratoga County, New York.

Their eldest child, Nathan was born January 11, 1789. In 1830, son Daniel was eight years old and in 1838, son John G. was thirty-eight years old and a resident of New York City. Other children are referred to, but no names are stated.

• In the 1790 Census, Nathan Whipple 1761-1832 is listed in Stephentown, NY. He has a single male son within the age range of Nathan Whipple, 1789-1860?. Nathan Whipple 1789-1860? was almost certainly born in Stephentown, Rensselaer, NY, and not in Vermont.
• In the 1830 Censuses for Petersburg, Grafton, and Berlin, NY (all Rensselaer County) - there is only a single Whipple family listed -- in Petersburg. That family was headed by Nathan Whipple. There are two male children listed, one under the age of 5 and one between the ages of 5 and 10. As Henry Whipple is thought to have been born about 1837... neither of the two male children could be him.
  • I firmly believe that one of the two was George W. Whipple, born about 1826-died after 1880. However, as Geo W. is my great great grandfather, I am not quite as objective as I might be on this subject. Except for a short period of 6 weeks when he enlisted in the 31st MA (disharged for medical reasons) George spent his entire life in either Berlin or Petersburg, NY and was born in one or the other town (likely Petersburg. Berlin was created out of Petersburg in 1806 and they are abutting communities.) There were, in fact, two George Whipples living in Petersburg at the time of the outbreak of the Civil War. The second, about 10-15 years younger, was likely born in nearby Grafton, NY and served in the 169th NY (his father was a Stephen Whipple from NH.)
