!BIOGRAPHY: "Evangeline Whipple, second wife of Bishop Whipple. Bishop Whipple married for the second time in 1896, Mrs. Michael Simpson of Saxonville, Mass. Her maiden name was Evangeline Marrs, and under the name of Evangeline Marrs Whipple, she became a most generous benefactor of the Cathedral and of the Parish of the Good Shepherd. ......She used some of her money to enlarge the Bishop's House, providing her with a big library facing the Cathedral. It was filled with treasures he had received over the years--all his Indian collection and gifts from world wide travel. After Bishop Whipple death in 1901, Mrs. Whipple continued to make her home in Farabault until the spring of 1910 when she was summoned to the death bed of her only brother, Mr. Kingsmill Marrs, who was living in Florence Italy. She did not expect to remain abroad, but circumstances arose which prolonged her stay indefinitely. Eventually she purchased a little villa in the old watering place, Bagni di Lucca, which she occupied together with her dear friend, Miss Rose Elizabeth Cleveland, a sister of the late President Grover Cleveland. When WW1 broke out, she and Miss Cleveland a tremendous piece of Relief Work for Italian women and children. They established schools, orphanages, and workrooms which they personally supervised. On a visit to London in 1930, Mrs. Whipple was taken seriously ill and died there in a nursing home. Her remains were taken back to Bagni di Lucca, where she sleeps in a Protestant cemetery beside her beloved friend of many years, Rose Elizabeth Cleveland." --P. Jefferson
