!BIOGRAPHY: " He held the office of town clerk of Chester for 27 years. Chester, 23 Feb 1872: 'Prescott Heald, for many years the efficient town clerk of Chester, expects to remove to Canton, Ill. next month. Mr. Heald will sell at auction on Wed. next a large amount of property, preparatory to leaving the State.'

"He joined his three sons Charles Thaddeus, Henry Prescott, and Allen Wood Heald in Canton Ill.. Charles and Allen appear in the 1860 Ill Census, while Allen and Henry are listed in the Adjutant General's Report of the State of Illinois in the 7th Illinois Cavalry.

"From his obituary in the 23 May 1873 Fulton County Ledger:

"Prescott Heald, Esq., died at his residence in this city, on Saterday evening last, May 17th, in the 64th year of his age, of Bright's disease of the kidneys, after a severe illness of about two weeks.

"Mr. Heald was born in Chester, Vermont, August 18th, 1809, and lived in that town until March, 1872, when he came to this State, and became a resident of Canton. In 1833 he was married to Miss Mary H. Whipple, of Wethersfield, Vermont, who survives him. To them five children were born - four sons and one daughter. The daughter died at the age of eight years. The sons are all living, reside in this State, and were all present when their father died. They are C.T., Henry, A.W., and Pleasant Heald.

"Prescott Heald was in active business life up to the time of his removal from Vermont to this State, and was highly honored and esteemed by the people among whom he lived. He served one term in the legislature of his native State, was town clerk of Chester for twenty-seven successive years, succeeding his father in that position, was town treasurer for many years, and held various places of trust and honor in his town. The office of town clerk had been filled by the family for a period of about seventy-five years, dating back to his grandfather. At the April election Mr. H. was elected one of the Justices of the Peace for this township.

"About eighteen years ago he united with the Congregational church of Chester, and two years after he was elected deacon of the church, which place he held until he came to Canton. The first Sunday in April last he united with the Congregational church in this city. He was a devoted christian man, and by his daily walk and peaceful death gave evidence of his acceptance with God. Funeral services were held at his late residence, Monday afternoon, Rev. H. Mills, paster of the Congregational church of this city, and Rev. Mr. Taylor, of the Congregational church of Farmington, officiating.

"As a man Mr. Heald, in his brief sojourn in this city, had won the esteem of all who became acquainted with him, by his mild, gentlemanly manner, and his upright deportment. He was a kind and devoted husband and father; and his loss in the family circle, particularly, will be deeply felt.

"For several years he had, at intervals, come nigh unto death, but the nature of his disease was not understood until the attack which caused his death, when it was ascertained to be that fatal disease caleed Bright's disease of the kidneys. His surviving children had all preceded him to the west, and he came here with his aged companion that they might spend the remainder of their days free from business cares, and enjoy the society of those dear to them by the dearest ties of nature until death should call them home. And peacefully he departed. Truly 'Blessed are they who die in the Lord'." --(Reported by L. Heald)
