!SOURCE: "Descendants of Seneca Whipple," email from N. Combs to Weldon Whipple, 10 jan 2005. Cites the 1860 Census, Jennings Co., IN, Columbia Twp., 48, age 24, farming. Gives name William R. Annis.

!SOURCE: Email from Joanne Lahr-Kreischer to Weldon Whipple, 2 Apr 2006. Joanne writes:

You show Mary Jane (daughter of Seneca) married William R. Annis. Seneca had a daughter Mary (according to the 1850 census), but also had a daughter by the name of Phebe Jane (these are two separate people, and should not have been combined). Phebe Jane Whipple and William F. Anness were married 17 March 1860 in Jennings County, Indiana. I maybe incorrect, but I'm having a great deal of difficulty understanding the leap from Mary to Phebe Jane.

The Biographical and Genealogical History of Wayne, Fayette, Union and Franklin Counties, Indiana, vol II pages 1016-1018 contains a sketch of Dr. William (middle initial R) Anness in which it notes that he married Miss Jennie Whipple, 1860, daughter of Seneca and Sarah (Skull) Whipple natives of Ohio and early settlers of Ripley County, Indiana. ... The first referenced source above, which if correct, raises another question - Dr. Anness m Jennie Whipple so Phebe must have been called Jennie and Mary was "Jane". Mary died 1849. In the 1840 census Seneca has one female under 5 (Mary E.). In 1850 Seneca has a daughter 7 years old (now Mary J.) This appears to be Phebe b abt 1842 but then again I've never actually seen a birth record for Phebe and most sources list her age based on census reports. In 1860 Phebe Jane Anness age 18 appears along with William Anness in Seneca's household. In 1870 Jane Anness is in her father's household with Charles and she is 29 years of age, no William. The source noted above says that Phebe died leaving one son Charles and Dr. Annes married a second time in 1870 and I have found a record of his second marriage. Now if Phebe Jane is the mother of Charles and died in 1870 who is the daughter Jane Whipple age 40, single, living with her parents in Marion in the 1880 census? Josephine was born 1846 so she would not be the correct age. I am wondering if Seneca and Sarah did not have another daughter "Jane" born abt 1840 who got combined with Phebe Jane in the 1850 census, in other words one was left out. If so Jane may not have appeared in the 1860 nor 1870 census as she would be grown by that time but perhaps reappears in 1880. Her brother John was an invalid from his war injury 1861 and perhaps she returned to take care of him as both parents were ill by that time with Seneca dying the following year and the mother perhaps a year later. John Whipple by the way did not die 1861 as one might think from the cemetery listings, he merely had a marker in the lot. He died in 1888.
