!SOURCE: Mail from Dean Roe to the Whipple Web Site, October 1997: "John Atte Stone was the first member of the Stone family to occupy the Barons in Ard Leigh Estate (so named because of previous owners in 1327, Walter Barons, who was probably the first copyhold tenant - so giving his name to the place), which was to become known as "Old Shields" later when the Vince family owned it. (The baron estate was purchased by James Vince in 1784.) "John Stone (the prefis Atte was dropped during the lifetime of John) was to obtain Barronysland (Baron-his-land) probably in 1468/9. The copyhold had been assigned to Geoffrey Doryvall in 1658/9, but he failed to pay his rent of 10s. 9d. (Court of the Manor of Bovils records.) By 1673, John Stone had called a John Deryfall had not paid him for the years use of a croft of land parcel of Barones in said Ardeley. In 11 Dec 1487, John's son Walter Stone appeared at court and made fealty to the lord for two crofts and a garden adjacent called Barons, held by copy of court roll which late was held by ____his father. (His father John died in 1487.)"
