One interesting thing I found from the Civil War records--Jonah Whipple, Edward's father, deserted from his company on 15 July 1862. As Jonah married in Canada in abt 1863, it is probable that he went there soon after deserting. All his children except the youngest were born in Canada, the family apparently remaining there until 1882 when they relocated to ND. (I could find no information on Ruth Whipple, but census records indicated that Jonah and Margaret had seven children.)
